Ku-ring-gai Meals on Wheels was launched in 1961 to provide nutritious meals and regular home visits that enabled frail aged residents and people with disability to retain a level of independence.
The service has grown over the years and now serves over 7,000 meals per month in the Northern Sydney region. The service is supported by a team of full and part-time staff, including a qualified chef, kitchen staff, centre management, administration support and a band of valued volunteers.

Our Story
Ku-ring-gai Meals on Wheels was founded in 1961 by Estelle Wren Cooper OAM, as an extension of the concept that originated in Britain during the Second World War.
Estelle was a social worker employed by Ku-ring-gai Council, with the support of the Ku-ring-gai Old Peoples Welfare Association (KOPWA). Pressing needs saw rapid expansion and a new production kitchen was funded in 1969 by the Commonwealth Government. However, it wasn’t until 1995 that Ku-ring-gai Meals on Wheels moved from under the auspices of Ku-ring-gai Council and KOPWA, to establish an independent not-for-profit organisation.

Today
In 2011, Ku-ring-gai Meals joined forces with Hornsby Meals on Wheels. And in 2022 Meals on Wheels Northern Beaches joined the partnership forming the organisation that serves the local community today.
Over the years, we have modernised in every way. Meals are now produced by a Head Chef in our state-of-the-art Turramurra kitchen and delivered to the highest quality and food standards. Meals cater for a range of cultural tastes and dietary needs, and our menus are designed to meet the National Meal Guidelines for older Australians.
Currently producing over 7,000 meals per month, The Village Chef by Meals on Wheels is set to become even more important to our community as the population ages, with people living longer and wishing to maintain independence.
We look forward to serving the community for many years to come.
